HELLAS DRAWN BY EUROPEAN TRAVELLERS
This special edition of engravings by foreign travellers to Hellas is intended to awaken images and memories of the Hellenic heritage which many of us have forgotten or never even known. These lavish illustrations provide an authentic picture of the Hellenic world and the daily life of its inhabitants during the 17th and 18th centuries. The plates usually consisted of pictures of landscapes, maps of all kinds (geographic, nautical, e.t.c.) plans, and views of cities and villages, harbours, drawings of local costumes, castles, archaeological monuments and artifacts churches, monasteries e.t.c. These engravings, like scenes and monuments they depict, are part of Hellenic 5.000 year old heritage. These foreign travellers took up that cause with pen and brush, and in so going, became modern Hellenes themselves. The cause is still vital; the monuments still beckon. Let these works be your own “invitation ά voyage’’.
