About the artwork
The main ability presented in Caterina Marouda’s work is that they have an authority of objective and unhindered performance. Being a color expert, as the Venetian artists of renaissance, Caterina Marouda uses it in order to create the third dimension and to enhance the subject with the use of adversative colors. The intense use of colors is balanced accomplishes to address both the human sentiment and reason.
Occio. Saying something about eyes and looks is almost a blasphemy since we never find the appropriate words for the phenomenon of the look of the other. A glance directed at you is always too intense, even if it is indifferent, even if it does not see you. We glance up from the looks of people without seeing them in the first place, we feel them on our skin, on our clothes, on our limbs. Emmanuel Levinas said that the only appropriate way to look at someone is without noticing the color of their eyes. This is because by looking at someone we grasp the whole subjectivity of this unique person, without dismembering them into parts and attributers such as color, expression and shape.
